How the decision works

Decision support helps you see how a decision actually works before anyone weighs the options: who decides, what can be chosen, which rules apply and when each step happens. With that picture in front of you, you can spend your effort on the choices that are really yours.

Most hard decisions look simpler from a distance. A hiring call, a vendor selection, a choice of school or a funding decision all come with eligibility rules, deadlines, approvals and options that open or close depending on what happened earlier.

Some parts of a decision are fully in your hands. Others depend on someone else, on timing, or on what is still available when your turn comes. Treating those the same way leads to wasted effort, or to a plan that falls apart at the last step.

So we start by mapping the decision itself. Are you picking one option, ranking several, or putting together a combination? When do you have to commit? Which options are you actually eligible for? What happens if your first choice isn't available?

Those details change how you should approach it. If you have to rank several options, you need more than one good answer. If availability shifts while the process runs, you need alternatives you understand before you get there. And there's no value in comparing options you can't have.

Every Decidient tool is built on the real structure of the decision it supports: the actual rules, steps and options, not a generic checklist. Once that structure is clear, the problem usually gets smaller and much easier to think about.

Before comparing answers, make sure you understand the question.
